Plans for a mixed-use development on East College Avenue received their first public unveiling last week, but this is only part of Decatur’s long-term plans for its underdeveloped east side.

The three partners who built East Decatur Station own 35 acres from New Street to Sams Street. In an interview with the AJC, architect Jack Honderd, one of EDS principal partners, said that several different developers will likely contribute mixed-used projects to the site over the next 20 years.

“We’d love to have an elementary school over there,” Honderd said. “[City Schools Decatur] needs land and for us a school fits our vision as part of a complete community.”

Superintendent Phyllis Edwards has been seeking potential school sites for years. Meantime the school board has held several executive sessions in recent weeks regarding “real estate matters,” though no action has been taken.
