A fire at the Canterbury Ridge apartment complex Friday afternoon destroyed or damaged all 28 units in a single building, a Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman told the AJC.

The calls to 911 began around 2 p.m. at the complex, located less than two miles from fire headquarters, Tim Cavender said. Firefighters could see heavy black smoke while approaching the complex, he said.

Police officers and firefighters went door to door making sure everyone was out of the building before battling the flames, Cavender said. "We took everybody out and away from the fire," he said.

The third floor of the building was destroyed by the blaze, and other units had moderate to extensive damage due to fire, smoke and water, Cavender said. "Fortunately, we didn't have any major injuries," he said.

Four residents were treated for smoke inhalation, and one woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of what was believed to be an anxiety attack due to the situation, Cavender said.

About 30 pieces of equipment from three fire agencies responded -- Cherokee County, the Canton Fire Department and Woodstock Fire and Rescue.

The Red Cross assisted the 25 families -- 46 adults and 10 kids -- displaced by the fire. Its cause was under investigation Friday evening.
