A North Fulton elementary school assistant principal resigned from her job last week, Fulton County Schools spokeswoman Susan Hale said Wednesday.

The resignation follows allegations that school administrators failed to report that they restrained special needs children.

Former Hillside Assistant Principal Tiffany A. Martin did not give a specific reason for her resignation, Hale said. Martin submitted her resignation Oct. 7, Hale said. The Fulton school board approved it Oct. 13.

Parents accused school administrators of avoiding state laws that require that they be notified within 24 hours in writing if their special needs child has to be restrained, Channel 2 Action News reported earlier this year.

“The allegations against Ms. Martin or the school have not been able to be fully investigated, largely in part because the claimant has not provided necessary evidence for our (human resources) department to investigate,” Hale said. “It remains inconclusive.”

In one alleged incident last school year, a teacher told Channel 2 she had to restrain one child several times because he would hit himself, students and teachers. When she went to the school’s administrators about the problem, she was told not to report it.

In a recording given to Channel 2, an administrator can be heard telling the teacher, who asked not to be named, “You are not to say ‘Do you want a copy of this?’”

It was not stated who the person is in the recording.

A selection committee consisting of parents and staff will interview candidates for the assistant principal vacancy. Beth Dawkins is serving as the interim assistant principal according to the school's website.
