A public meeting is set for Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Alpharetta to discuss a developer’s proposal to convert the site of a defunct Sears department store into a mixed-use development with apartments and commercial space.

The Community Zoning Information Meeting on the Brookfield/North Point Mall redevelopment proposal is set for 6 to 7 p.m. at Alpharetta City Hall. A public hearing before the Planning Commission is scheduled for Feb. 7. If the commission forwards the item, the City Council would take it up on Feb. 25. Information: https://bit.ly/2Axmdyr

North Point Mall LLC is seeking rezoning for about 14 acres from PSC (Planned Shopping Center) to MU (Mixed Use). Plans call for razing the Sears store and constructing 328 rental apartments and 24,000 square feet of shops and restaurants. A conditional use is requested to allow the rental units, and several variances are sought.

The developer also plans 15.67 acres of civic/amenity space, including a playground, sports field, plaza/event area, and trails for pedestrians and bicycles.

North Point Mall opened in 1993 as a regional shopping center. Like other malls, it has struggled in recent years with the loss of anchor store Sears and other tenants.
