The Alpharetta City Council has approved extending by two years the Local Jobs Creation Grant, an incentive program for companies to hire locally.

The council adopted an amendment to an intergovernmental contract between the city and the Alpharetta Development Authority, extending the sunset date of the jobs initiative to June 30, 2021. It’s the second time the council has extended the program.

Created to support the Georgia Quality Jobs Tax Credit and Opportunity Zone Tax Credit at the local level, the program has $32,500 in funds still available, staff said in a report to the council.

The development authority can award an additional $500 per new job created in tandem with a state jobs incentive, staff said. It is available when a new hire is an Alpharetta resident; he or she must remain employed at least one year before the incentive is paid out.

A standalone award of $250 per newly created job also is available for Tech Alpharetta graduate companies that outgrow the Innovation Center, staff said.

They must locate in commercial space in the city for at least 12 months, and employ Alpharetta residents.
