The Alpharetta City Council has approved a master developer agreement clearing the way for a hotel and conference center planned next to the current Avalon mixed-use development near Old Milton Parkway and Ga. 400.

The council this week signed off on a public/private partnership with North American Properties and Stormont Hospitality Group for the $107 million project, which consists of a 65,000-square-foot conference center to be used for trade shows and conventions, plus a high-end Marriott hotel.

The city will increase its hotel-motel tax by 3 cents on the dollar to cover issuance of $24.9 million in revenue bonds, which is the city’s portion of the development’s cost.

There’s no word on a groundbreaking date for the hotel/conference facility, which will comprise Phase 2 of Avalon and be located between the current completed Phase 1 and Ga. 400. Assistant City Manager James Drinkard said once that happens, construction time is estimated at 18 to 24 months.
