Fayetteville police apprehended a robbery suspect Friday just minutes after he fled a bank empty-handed.

The man walked into the Bank of America at 326 GA Hwy 314 at around 10:27 a.m. Friday, police said.

He passed a note to the teller demanding money or he would “start shooting.” The teller was able to activate the panic alarm and the suspect fled without any cash.

Bank employees described the suspect’s vehicle, which was found in a nearby neighborhood minutes later by a Fayetteville officer. The suspect was attempting to change his clothes, the officer said.

Varion M. Gomez, 31, of Jonesboro was arrested without incident after bank employees identified him.

Gomez was taken to the Fayette County Jail and will be charged with armed robbery and driving on a suspended license.

Fayetteville detectives said they found the demand note and the clothing Gomez had been wearing during the attempted robbery.
