All 15 branches of the Gwinnett County Public Library will soon have the same schedule -- but not before they close for an entire week.
GCPL officials announced Thursday that all branches will be closed May 9-15 for a "system-wide technology upgrade." The upgrade will include replacing "all self-checkout stations, workroom check-in stations, and security gates at library entrances."
Officials said book drops will remain open during the closure. Other resources will be available online at gwinnettpl.org.
Each branch will reopen May 16 -- the same day the library system moves to the new, streamlined schedule that officials announced last month. Starting that day, every GCPL branch will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
In recent years, budget and staffing constraints had forced the library system to put staggered hours of operation in place at different branches. The new schedule also adds seven open hours to each branch.
"We no longer need to memorize complicated sets of hours," library executive director Charles Pace said in a news release announcing the schedule change. "By adjusting staff schedules and our service model, we're able to increase library access to the community while providing more morning and evening hours for our patrons."
