Beginning the week of Oct. 9, the small downtown parking lot on Main Street next to the Caboose and across from Lacey Drugs will be closed in Acworth.

The space will be used to begin storing equipment and supplies for the downtown project.

This parking area will be redeveloped into Depot Park with the replica Train Depot, History Area, restrooms and greenspace.

To discuss the downtown revitalization plans, Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood and the Board of Aldermen will hold their Fall Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Acworth Municipal Court Room, 4408 Acworth Industrial Drive.

Over the past 15 years, Acworth officials have been revitalizing the downtown area “to make it a walkable and economically thriving community,” according to the city’s website.

So far, the city has made improvements to Main, Cherokee, Dallas, Academy, Carnes, Southside, School and Taylor Streets and Senator Russell Avenue.

Also, the city has built five new public parking lots downtown and all of the railroad crossings were converted into silent crossings to reduce the noise when the trains blew their horns going through town.

In 2016, the city opened the expanded Logan Farm Park on Cherokee Street with walking trails, open greenspace, a picnic shelter and a large playground.

Beginning last month and continuing through the end of 2018 or early 2019, the city began the next redevelopment phase with:

  • the realignment of Lemon Street,
  • a new left-turn lane on Main Street at Lemon,
  • a pedestrian overpass over the railroad tracks,
  • construction of a new public parking lot,
  • the small public parking lot at Main and Lemon being converted into a park with a replica Train Depot/History Center,
  • the renovation of a historic home into an Arts Center and
  • the construction of a new Community Center.

Regular email blasts will be sent as traffic plans are developed and with any changed and unforeseen issues that arise.
