Three abandoned boats notorious as “The Trio” at the south end of Lake Lanier have finally been removed after months of effort by state and federal authorities and a lake citizens group.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded a sailboat and pontoon craft, and the Lake Lanier Association got rid of a sinking houseboat with the help of contractor Marine Specialties Inc. – which used a tractor and claw to break up the craft, according to a Facebook posting by the association.

“These boats were identified in March, and through many follow-up visits, actions and dedication by officers from the Law Enforcement Division-Georgia Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Sidney Lanier area rangers and LLA members, these boats were removed,” the association said.

The craft were dealt with through the Abandoned and Derelict Dock and Boat Initiative. The association reminded people that those who abandon boats or docks may be subject to citations, fines, criminal charges and arrest. Information: https://bit.ly/2NEXDmo
