An apartment complex, north of Craigie Avenue and just outside Avondale Estates, has finally been razed nearly a decade after closing and getting boarded up. The eight deteriorating and fenced-in buildings, originally built in 1958, were demolished a couple weeks ago.

According to documents submitted to DeKalb County, Atlanta developer Thrive Homes will build 46 town homes on the 2.6-acre site. The construction timeline is currently uncertain.

The abandoned complex, which backed up to the city’s southwest border, had been an ill-lit dumping ground for trash and a home for vagrants.

Both this site and the adjacent Decatur Terrace neighborhood are on Avondale’s tentative annexation map, although Decatur Terrace was also on Decatur’s 2015 annexation map.

Working titles for the project are Villa Circle Townhomes (for the street that’ll run through it) and Avondale Grove.
