Home values are booming in Lithonia, Atlanta and Clarkston, according to DeKalb County property assessment estimates for 2017.
These cities outpaced the rest of the county, where residential real estate gained nearly 8 percent in assessed value this year. Property assessments are based on recent sales to estimate market values.
The sharpest increase in home values is in the city of Lithonia, where assessments increased 40 percent since last year.
In parts of Atlanta located in DeKalb — Druid Hills, Kirkwood and East Lake — residential values are up about 16 percent. Homes values increased almost 11 percent in Clarkston.
The slowest growth occurred in the cities of Tucker, Doraville and Dunwoody.
Residents whose properties gained value will have to pay higher property tax bills unless local government officials lower tax rates this summer.
