Remembering the wintry blast that greeted the start of the legislative session in January, the House on Tuesday agreed to a Senate resolution designed to help keep roads clear of ice and snow.

Senate Resolution 30 urges but does not require the state Department of Transportation to ready a list of contractors who can be activated during weather emergencies. It also would allow local governments to clear state roads when needed.

The resolution, which passed 149-20, also encourages the department to develop a multijurisdictional plan to handle weather emergencies.

Georgia State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources and Georgia Bureau of Investigation officers helped lawmakers get to the first day of this year's session, but the Transportation Department drew fire for its response to the storm that kept many metro Atlantans home from work for a week.
