Same-sex married couples living in Georgia and other states that do not recognize their unions will be treated as married for federal tax purposes, the Obama administration announced Thursday.

The U.S. Supreme Court in June struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, paving the way for same-sex married couples to have access to the federal benefits afforded to all married couples. Thursday’s announcement applied only to couples who have been legally married, not those in civil unions or domestic partnerships.
