Gwinnett County will expand its local bus fleet and improve its Sugarloaf Mills transit center under measures approved by the Board of Commissioners Tuesday.

Commissioners agreed to buy new five transit buses and related equipment from Gillig LLC for $2.3 million. Eighty percent of the money will come from the Federal Transit Administration.

The new buses are needed to add new routes to the system in the future.

Commissioners also:

*Agreed to buy seven paratransit buses from National Bus Sales and Leasing through a state contract. The buses will cost $533,351, with 80 percent of the money coming from the FTA. The new vehicles will replace existing paratransit buses for the disabled.

*Awarded a $1.7 million contract to Archimetric Design and Construction for an expansion of the Sugarloaf Mills park and ride lot. The company will build another bus lane and a small fare building, as well as turn lanes, a new traffic signal and sidewalks. The county will pay about 3.6 percent of the cost, with the remainder covered by federal and state funds.
