Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves is speaking to the Atlanta Press Club this morning – part of a publicity blitz leading up to his State of the County speech Thursday.

Buttressed by a new County Commission that has pledged to push for more effective, efficient government, Eaves is telling anyone who will listen that Fulton County is heading in the right direction. He recently met with the editorial board of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and last week spoke to the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists.

These appearances will culminate in Eaves’ first-ever State of the County speech Thursday at the Loudermilk Center in Atlanta. In a recent interview with the AJC, Eaves said the recent turnover on the commission makes this the right time to deliver such a speech.

Though the commission has at times seemed dysfunctional, the three new members who took office in January have helped set a new tone. They've unanimously approved a budget for the first time since 1991, hired a respected county manager and pledged to deliver top-notch services more efficiently. Just last week, a judge ended a decade of federal supervision of the county jail.

“Even though the commission has become a little bit more conservative from a partisan standpoint, we actually are becoming more progressive in terms of willingness to do some good things for the county’s delivery of services,” he said.

Eaves is expected to highlight that new spirit at the State of the County speech. He’ll offer a preview at today’s Press Club breakfast.
