Gwinnett County will upgrade all of the county’s flashing yellow “school zone” beacons under a proposal approved by the Board of Commissioners Tuesday.

Commissioners awarded a $699,398 contract to Temple Inc. to do the work. The company will update 270 units in 150 school zones across Gwinnett.

The existing beacons were installed in 1999, and the software used to control them is not compatible with current operating systems. Temple will upgrade that software to allow two-way communication between Gwinnett’s Traffic Control Center and the beacons.

To pay for the work, Gwinnett will use money from a voter-approved special sales tax for construction projects.
