More students are enrolling in Gwinnett County, exceeding the school district’s projections.

Gwinnett officials reported Tuesday that 178,274 students are currently in the school district, 400 more than initially estimated. An additional 7,167 students enrolled in Gwinnett since the first day of school, on Aug. 8.

Norcross High School has more students than any Gwinnett school, records showed, with 3,793 students. North Gwinnett and Jackson had the highest enrollment of any middle school and elementary school, respectively.

Gwinnett is by far the state’s largest public school district. Cobb County has the second-largest number of students. Last year, Cobb had nearly 113,000 students, according to state education department data.

Many of Gwinnett’s highest-populated schools are in the Lilburn area. Several of the elementary schools with high enrollments also have large percentages of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Two schools that opened in August, Baldwin Elementary and Coleman Middle, had enrollments that were slightly below district projections. Discovery High School, which opened in 2015, had 282 more students than projected, the largest difference in the district.
