Eva Childers has yet another reason to dread Sept. 29, her birthday.

On Saturday, while the Cherokee County woman was out with family celebrating turning 73, her house burned down.

Two years ago tragedy struck Childers twice on her birthday. She buried her husband, and then her grown grandson killed another grandson that same day. According to the Pickens County Progrees, the shooting was eventually ruled to be in self defense.

Saturday Childers lost the home she built with her late husband 56 years ago, she said.

“Time we got up there, the neighbors called and said my house was burning,” she said.

Childers said she’s thankful she, her son and granddaughter who live at the home were not there when the blaze began. She said her insurance plan will help her with rebuilding her home.

“I don’t know, I don’t want to have any more. Maybe it’ll finish me off next time,” Childers told Channel 2 Action News Sunday.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the blaze, according to Channel 2.
