Hurricane Isaias, which is bearing down on the Bahamas and is headed toward the East Coast, is the ninth named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.
Isaias also is the fifth named storm to form in July, which ties the 2005 record, according to wpxi.com.
The pronunciation of Isaias is ees-ah-EE-ahs, according to the Spanish and Portuguese version. The English version is Isaiah. It is a biblical name meaning “God is my salvation.”
Isaias was the earliest ninth Atlantic named storm to form, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach. The previous record was Irene on Aug. 7, 2005, Klotzbach tweeted.
Since 1851, 98 #hurricanes have tracked through the Bahamas per NOAA historical hurricane tracks website. #Isaias is forecast to be the 99th hurricane to do so.https://t.co/Qvz5ltqu8f pic.twitter.com/NdcoleVvLX

So far this year, Cristobal, Danielle, Edouard, Fay, Gert and Hanna have also been the earliest named Atlantic storms for their alphabetic order. Hanna also became a hurricane.
