A retired officer who had just finished escorting a funeral was injured Monday afternoon when his motorcycle hit a guardrail in Cherokee County.

The 54-year-old driver, whose name was not released, hit the guardrail on Veterans Cemetery Road, off Ga. 20, around 2:30 p.m., according to Tim Cavender, spokesman for the Cherokee fire department. The man was on the opposite side of the guardrail when firefighters and deputies arrived at the scene, Cavender said.

The man was conscious and alert while being transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for treatment of leg and shoulder injuries, Cavender said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
