Former Marine saddles up for ride across country

Even after serving his country for four years, he said you never stop being a Marine.

“It’s the honor of my life, to do this ride,” Littrell said.

His ride is part of a journey with a strong purpose to raise money for wounded members of the military.

"We're riding from just south of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to Camp Pendleton,  to raise money for the Semper Fi Fund," Littrell said.

The Semper FI Fund  is an organization that provides financial help, and lifetime support for wounded, and injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

“It’s so important to me, because we’re losing 22 veterans a day to suicide,” he said.

Littrell said he was nearly one of them.

“I spent a long night, staring at a pistol on the table in front of me.”

Since hopping on his horses back in May, he has traveled about 20 miles a day.

He said the experience has given him the opportunity to absorb everything America has to offer.

"Seeing this country at three miles an hour, you get to see the good, the bad the ugly every bit of America, you get to see it."

He said mosquitoes in Mississippi were his least favorite part about the ride, but knew his brothers in the battlefield, were dealing with much worse.

"To my grave I will say this ride was going to happen. It just somehow picked me to do it," he says.   Littrel's goal is to get to Camp Pendleton Marine Base in San Diego, California, but he says he's in no rush, and actually left his schedule in North Carolina.
