The fiancé of a Rockdale County elementary school teacher who reported her fatal gunshot Tuesday as a suicide was charged Friday with murder in connection with her death.

Antione Hood, 30, is currently being held in the DeKalb County Jail. He is charged with killing Candace McGriff, 28, a teacher at C.J. Hicks Elementary School in Conyers.

Police were called to McGriff’s home on Concepts 21 Drive in Lithonia around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, where, according to the police report, Hood and a female neighbor were standing outside the front door of the residence on the balcony.

Hood maintained a calm manner and directed the officers toward the rear bedroom, where officers saw McGriff lying face up on the right side of the bed on the floor.

The report says there was a firearm on the right end of the bed and McGriff had a bullet wound to her chest.

Hood told police he was attempting to leave McGriff, who told him she would shoot herself to prevent him from doing so, according to the report.
