An 83-year-old woman was struck and killed Wednesday morning as she attempted to walk across the street near her Cobb County home, according to police.

Katie Swinehamer was in a crosswalk on George Busbee Parkway at the intersection with Frey Road, near Kennesaw, when she was hit by a Chevrolet Avalanche, Officer Alicia Chilton with Cobb police said. Investigators believe Brian Marcus, 52, of Woodstock was making a left turn from Frey Road onto George Busbee Parkway when he hit Swinehamer, Chilton said.

Marcus was not injured in the collision, which happened shortly before 8 a.m. But Swinehamer was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in critical condition, police said. She died Wednesday afternoon.

The wreck remained under investigation late Wednesday and no charges had been filed, Chilton said. Anyone with information on the wreck is asked to call police at 770-499-3987.
