A woman who robbed a bank in Wyoming gave the money to strangers in the bank's parking lot, police said.

Linda Thompson walked into a bank in Cheyenne last week and gave the teller a note claiming she had a gun, according to authorities.

The teller gave Thompson more than $16,000.

According to KGWN, Thompson left the bank and began tossing the money into the air and handing out some of it to people in the parking lot.

After distributing the money, Thompson sat down and waited for police to arrive, authorities said.

KGWN reported that Thompson was recently released from the Oregon state prison and was homeless. After being released, Thompson was beaten by strangers in a park and hospitalized.

Thompson told authorities that she couldn't get a bed at a shelter, so she decided to rob a bank in order to go back to prison, police said.

She faces another 20 years behind bars.
