Routine SUV rescue ends with driver accused of nearly hitting deputy

A Hall County man was arrested after a suspended license ended with him nearly hitting a deputy, authorities said.

All Joshua Seth Chambers had to do was switch seats with his passenger.

The 19-year-old Cleveland man had a suspended license and Hall County sheriff’s deputies — who had worked an earlier incident involving Chambers — flagged him down to tell him that his 23-year-old female passenger, who had a valid license, must drive their SUV.

But Chambers, authorities say, refused to leave the SUV and sped away, striking the woman — who had left the vehicle to go to a bank ATM — and nearly hitting one of the deputies.

Authorities arrested Chambers just after midnight Monday after he spun out and got stuck in the mud of a yard next to the bank, Hall County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Ware said.

Earlier, deputies were called to the 6100 block of Old Dahlonega Highway about a suspicious vehicle stuck in the 911 caller’s yard, Ware said in a statement.

Deputies arrived at the home and found Chambers’ 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe.  A wrecker was used to pull Chambers’ car from the yard and the homeowner declined to press charges, Ware said.

But things didn’t end there.

Deputies eventually learned Chambers’ license was suspended, but by then he had driven away.

They caught up with him and his passenger in the United Community Bank parking lot in Murrayville with the intention of asking the two to switch seats, Ware said.

Deputies attempted to speak to Chambers, but Ware said he refused to get out of the Tahoe and things went downhill from there.

The woman was not injured, Ware said.

Chambers remains in the Hall County jail on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, obstruction, suspended license, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving.
