A North Fulton mother is accused of leaving her five children alone in a dirty, roach-infested home, according to police.
Neighbors in the Roswell Commons Way town homes called police last week after seeing children playing in the street at 2 a.m., Officer Lisa Holland with Roswell police said. Officers arrived to find a 12-year-old who had been left in charge of four younger siblings, including some who were hanging out of second-floor window, according to police.
“He told us that his mom put them to bed at night, it was 11 o’clock when she put them to bed and went to a friend’s house,” Holland told Channel 2 Action News. “He didn’t have a cellphone. There was no home phone, so the mom left the children home alone without any way to contact anyone if there was an emergency.”
Inside, officers found rotten food throughout the home, which was crawling with roaches, Holland said.
“Officers went into the bedroom where the children sleep and saw roaches all over the bedding, all over the clothes piled up on the floor,” Holland said.
All five children were placed in protective custody, police said. The children’s mother, Beatrice Wright, was arrested and charged with reckless conduct, police said. Wright was released from jail Aug. 3 after posting $2,000 bond, jail records showed.
