Police allow family to ‘grieve’ before filing charges in baby’s shooting

Police hadn't filed charges Sunday after an 18-month-old died from a gunshot wound to the head because they said they were allowing the family to grieve.

Adult family members were in the bedroom where two boys were playing Saturday, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Someone set down a loaded .45-caliber handgun within reach of the boys, but investigators aren’t sure who pulled the trigger.

The baby’s 3-year-old brother may have grabbed the gun or the 18-month-old may have accidentally shot himself, Henry County police Lt. Mike Ireland told Channel 2.

“There were adults in the room at the time, but the adults were not paying attention to what was going on,” Ireland said. “They did not actually see the incident occur.”

Police are giving the family time to mourn the loss of the toddler before considering possible criminal charges.

“It’s a tragic time for all the family members, so we’re allowing everybody to grieve at this time,” Ireland said.
