A Garden City police officer, whose Facebook plea for unity went viral, expressed some regret Saturday for accidentally stepping into the spotlight.
Lt. Tim McMillan took to his fan page to thank supporters, but added that not all the reactions have been positive and he has even had to remove pictures of his wife and children from social media.
"In light of my post going "viral" I hope you all know, I am just a regular person," McMillan wrote in an emotional post Saturday in which he also discussed his department's response to Hurricane Matthew. "We must all, no matter our race, religion, gender or ethnicity look ourselves in the mirror and say, 'What can I do to make the world better for others."
The fan page, which has received over 12,000 ‘likes,’ documents McMillan’s thoughts and his duties with the police department.
The officer’s original post, written on Oct. 1, was shared thousands of times. In it, he documented pulling over a young, black man and his dismay to see how terrified the young man was.
“I truly don’t even care who’s fault it is that young man was so scared to have a police officer at his window,” McMillan wrote. “Blame the media, blame bad cops, blame protesters or Colin Kaepernick if you want. It doesn’t matter to me who’s to blame. I just wish somebody would fix it.”
