A family narrowly escaped an armed robber after he broke into their home, stole their possessions and forced them to drive to an ATM.
A couple was asleep in their home along Sylvan Road on Monday morning when the father heard a noise from the kitchen, according to Atlanta police. The man called his son’s name thinking it may have been him, but got no answer.
Soon after, the gunman pushed open the bedroom door, pointed a black semi-automatic at them and demanded their wallets, phones and computers, according to a police report. The gunman told the man to tie the woman’s hands with a bed sheet and forced them into their car to drive to the nearest ATM, which was at a Texaco station.
After everyone exited the car, the woman ran behind the building while the man and son jumped back in the car. The gunman tried to chase the woman, police said, but once he saw the car coming toward him, he fired several shots at the man and his son. A bullet struck the car, but the father and son were not hurt.
The gunman was last seen running down Perkerson and Sylvan roads. He is believed to be between 18 and 25 years old.
Gas station security footage was not immediately available.
It was later determined that the gunman entered the home by removing a rear-window air conditioning unit.
