A 16-year-old Newton High student was in a fight with another student in the cafeteria last week when an administrator tried to break it up.

But the student turned and punched the school official and now faces battery charges, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“He should have thought about what he was doing,” former student Terrance Sinclair said.

School resource officers said the student hit the administrator in the neck, then was handcuffed, removed from school grounds and released to his parents.

Newton County school officials issued a statement.

“We will not tolerate anyone striking or trying to harm one of our employees in any way,” spokeswoman

Sherri Davis-Viniard said. “In addition to any possible legal charges, the student will also be charged with violating the student code of conduct. He will be disciplined accordingly.”

Sheriff’s Sgt. Cortney Morrison said there had been no problems with the student before.

“It’s really up to the juvenile court what he’ll face,” Morrison said. “He could range from detention in a youth detention center to probation.”

Student Kennedy Rogers said, “As a student, I don’t think it was right to punch the teacher.”
