Atlanta police: Robbery by preteens is rare felony on Beltline

Atlanta police are investigating an Easter Sunday armed robbery on the Beltline. The suspects are 11 and 12 years old.

Three boys approached a woman on the trail in the Adair Park area, investigators say. They asked to use her phone, a request she declined. Then one boy showed her a gun in his waistband, demanding the phone. She dropped it on the ground and the boys grabbed it and ran away, police said.

Police recognized the boys from security camera footage and arrested an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old on Monday. They were taken to the Metro Regional Youth Detention Center and charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and underage gun possession. Another 12-year-old was detained but hasn’t been charged.

Police said the arrested 12-year-old had the weapon.

This was the second felony reported on all of the Beltline this year, according to the Atlanta Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit. The agency didn’t immediately say how many misdemeanors there were.

The first felony was on the other side of the Beltline at Freedom Park. On April 2, a disturbed young man in his early 20s pointed a .22 caliber rifle at a group after he said he was bullied online, according to an incident report. The suspect couldn’t tell responding officers who the bully was and neither could witnesses.

He was charged with reckless conduct and aggravated assault.
