Investigators believe two cars were racing late Monday night before one driver lost control, hitting two children and then a church in southwest Atlanta.

After crashing into the Perfect Church of Atlanta on McDaniel Street, the driver and his passenger ran from the Chevrolet Camaro and got inside the Dodge Charger they were racing against, Atlanta police said. Witnesses said the driver of the Chevrolet had a gun.

Five children were standing outside of the church at the time of the crash, witnesses said. Three boys were able to get out of the way, but a 6-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were struck.

“I jumped by the door and tried to look for my cousin and all I heard was a person screaming,” Jahrmon Norwood told Channel 2 Action News.

One of the children suffered a broken leg and the other had several bruises. Both Kemetrius Brown and Presious Heard were taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and were in stable condition, police said.

Brick steps and metal railing at an entrance of the church were damaged in the crash.

The search continued Tuesday afternoon for the drivers of the two cars.
