Dozens of computers worth an estimated $60,000 were stolen Thursday in a predawn burglary at one of the city’s most exclusive private schools.

The break-in at Pace Academy in the 900 block of West Paces Ferry Road was reported to Atlanta police just before 7 a.m. Thursday.

Fred Assaf, headmaster of the 37-acre Buckhead campus, said the thieves broke out several windows and stole about 30 Apple computers from the library and computer lab.

“I think they were targeting a specific kind of computer,” Assaf told Channel 2 Action News.

According to an Atlanta police incident report, surveillance video showed a total of six males, all wearing white masks and gloves, entering the school in two shifts. They first entered the building at 7:12 p.m. Wednesday, then disconnected and took computers. They returned between 12:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. Thursday and took more computers.

The suspects, who also damaged numerous doors in the school, were believed to be driving an older model gray Pontiac GT, according to the report.

The 1,080-student school is still on summer break, with fall classes set to begin on Aug. 18.

The Buckhead community has been plagued recently by a string of burglaries and home invasion robberies. Last week, federal prosecutors indicted two Memphis men in a late May home invasion and kidnapping.
