The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners formally named the 149-acre park being developed in the eastern part of the county “Cherokee Veterans Park” at this week’s meeting. The site along Ga. 20 east of Canton had carried the working title of East Park.
Gwinnett -based architectural firm Lose and Associates will unveil a master plan for the facility at a public input meeting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Elementary School, 10370 E. Cherokee Drive, Canton.
Preliminary plans have called for athletic fields and baseball/softball diamonds, tennis courts, a playground and pavilions, said Parks Director Bryan Reynolds.
Construction work will kick off in either the summer or fall of 2015 with plans to build the $9 million facility in two phases over several years’ time, Reynolds said.
The first phase is being financed by the county’s voter-approved 2008 parks bond program.
