The Peace Officers Standards and Training Council has opened an investigation into Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill and the shooting of a friend on Sunday, POST Council Executive Director Ken Vance said Thursday.

Though the council has begun gathering evidence, no significant action will be taken until the criminal case is resolved, Vance said.

The council has several options ranging from no action to permanently revoking his law enforcement certification.

Hill was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor reckless conduct for shooting Gwenevere McCord in the stomach at a model house in Gwinnett County where she was working on Sunday. She is in critical condition and has been unable to speak with investigators.

On Thursday, Hill issued a statement following his arrest Wednesday.

“I want to thank you all for your continued prayers for Gwenevere, and ask that you continue to keep her and her family lifted in prayer. As a result the tragic accident, I was charged with Reckless Conduct, a Misdemeanor, in Gwinnett County.

“While focused on the recovery and healing of Gwenevere, I will simultaneously continue with my duties and responsibilities as the Sheriff of Clayton County.

“Please continue to pray for Gwenevere and her family.”
