Final repairs of the Clairmont Road water main break probably will be done Monday, and citizens who live nearby will need to keep boiling water as a precaution at least until then, officials said. The boil water advisory remained in effect Sunday.
Water service was restored after crews worked around the clock for several days, but any water used for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food should still be boiled for at least a minute, DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan said Saturday.
“It’s the same as it was yesterday; there have been only incremental change over the past day.”
Workers got the water flowing again, but they were unable to remove all the water from the affected pipes because of faulty valves that will need to be repaired or replaced. That should happen Monday, Brennan said.
Crews will repair the pipes and representatives of the Environmental Protection Division will test to see that the water flowing to consumers and businesses is safe, Brennan said.
Affected are about 1,000 properties, including a mix of apartments, hotels, business offices, retail businesses and single-family homes.
The area covered by that advisory runs from Plaster Road to the north, I-85 to the east, Buford Highway to the west and Briarwood Road to the south. Not everyone in that zone lost water, but everyone there is getting water from those pipes.
“The area is under a boiled-water advisory,” Brennan said.
Since Thursday, traffic along Clairmont has been limited to one lane running north and one lane running south. That will be the case until the pipes – and the hole above the problem – are repaired, Brennan said.
