City council candidates in north Fulton cities will face off in debates starting Monday. The events will help voters decide on their choice for elected office in the November 2 election.
City council representation in north Fulton cities could look vastly different after the election. Several new candidates are running for office while longtime officials are stepping down.
This week, debates will be held for Roswell candidates on Monday and Wednesday, and Johns Creek contenders on Thursday. More debates with candidates for those cities and Sandy Springs will be held the following week. And community leaders are working on scheduling debates for Milton and Alpharetta.
On Monday, Roswell Mayor Lori Henry and challengers Kurt Wilson and Jason Yowell will field questions during an event at Roswell Community Masjid, located at 345 Market Place. The event will be streamed live online at 6:30 p.m. but will not be open to the public due to the pandemic, outreach director Shaheen Bharde said.
Kinza Tariq and Shafina Khabani, who are members of the north Fulton Muslim community, will question the candidates.

On Wednesday, Roswell City Council members Matt Judy and Marie Willsey will participate in a 6:30 p.m. debate with five other candidates. Two of those contenders are running against the incumbents. The other three candidates are running to fill Councilman Matt Tyser’s seat. He is not running for reelection and said he plans to run for a seat in the Georgia Legislature next year.
Student Leadership Johns Creek will host two candidate forums that are open to the public. On Thursday, high school students will host a mayoral debate at 6:30 p.m. at The Standard Club, 6230 Abbotts Bridge Road. City Councilman John Bradberry and former City Councilman Brian Weaver will face off for the event.
The student leadership organization will host another debate on Sept. 30 at the same time and location with nine City Council candidates looking to fill four posts where there are no incumbents running for those seats.
A Sandy Springs candidate forum will be held Sept. 27 at North Springs High School, 7447 Roswell Road. Candidates for both mayor and City Council will take questions from Tammy Joyner with the Atlanta Civic Circle and Amy Wenk of Reporter Newspapers. The public is invited to attend. Masks are required.
One or two City Council debates could be in the works in Alpharetta. Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said he was contacted by two local organizations asking for contact information to schedule possible debates. Last week, a City Council candidate said no debate had been scheduled.
A comment on the City of Milton Facebook page Tuesday said a candidate debate for that city is being organized for Oct. 12 and details would be shared soon.
