A $400,000 grant is coming to Cobb County to create a program to combat elder abuse. The grant has been awarded to the YWCA of Northwest Georgia and its partners from Cobb Police Department, the Georgia Division of Aging and the Cobb Judicial Circuit’s District Attorney’s Office. The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) is making the grant award so those groups can implement the Abuse in Later Life Program. The grant will be spread out over a three-year period with the goal of training law enforcement, prosecutors, judges and victim service organizations. The target population is older victims of abuse, exploitation and neglect, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. Only eight other agencies across the country are receiving this grant. The YWCA of Northwest Georgia aims to create policies and programs that can be replicated across the state to address the problem of abuse in later life.
