Following a recent public hearing with numerous citizens expressing opposition, the Peachtree Corners City Council chose to deny a request from Summit Group Gas Station for a new convenience store and gas station at the southwestern corner of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and South Old Peachtree Road.
The primary concern revolves around the need for a 75-foot setback between construction of the building and the adjacent townhome community. The proposed gas station and 4,000-square-foot convenience store would have included an additional 1,000-square-foot retail storefront. While there is some space to shift the building and fuel pumps forward toward Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, this would impede the circulation of fuel tanker trucks on the site.
The owner of the property expressed concern during the public hearing that other commercial opportunities had found the property too small to accommodate their needs and that a reduction in the buffer was necessary to the sale of the land.
The planning commission noted the property has other development options available within the current commercial zoning which would not require the rear buffer reduction adjacent to the townhomes and recommended denial of the application.
