Germany is the ancestral home of many Americans, and a number of German genealogy websites are worth exploring.

The May/June issue of Family Tree Magazine has a great article by noted research expert James M. Beidler focusing on 12 websites. There are German records on all the major genealogy sites, so we will just focus here on some of those based in Germany. Archion.de contains Protestant church records, while data.matricula-online.eu has Catholic records. Kartenmeister.com covers geographical names changes due to the World Wars. Compgen.de is a great site that pulls together several others containing German records and is a must. If you have Austrian roots, you should try GenTeam.at.

“Genetic Detective” on ABC

“The Genetic Detective” is a new television show that starts May 19 at 10 p.m. on ABC. It will feature renowned genetic genealogist CeCe Moore. She will show the power of DNA in unraveling many cold case crimes as well as newer ones. So it’s worth checking out.

The Reprint Company

The Reprint Company, with Tom Smith as its president, has been a publisher and reprinter of great local history and genealogy books for a long time. I had not heard from Smith in some time until we reconnected lately. Check out his website, reprintcompany.com, and see what is there. The company has been in business for decades and has produced some great publications. The publications cover many southeastern states.

Signatures of your ancestors

“Signed, Sealed, and Delivered” in the latest Family Tree Magazine is about studying your ancestors’ handwriting as part of your research. The article also contains ideas on things you can do with signatures, such as framing a signed record as a way of honoring your past, overlaying a signature over a photo, adding a signature to a scrapbook or photo album, or attaching a signature to an online family tree.
