Occupation: Retired
Age: 75
Residence: Athens
Number of Peachtrees: This will make 36 consecutive.
Why do you run? To keep physically fit and to be in the crowd on July 4th.
Why did you start running? As part of my physical-fitness training as an FBI agent.
When was your first Peachtree? 1976, shortly after moving to the Atlanta area. I had only run five miles in a single training run. It was hot, but I ran with about 25 of my closest associates from the local FBI office. We stayed at a local Lenox-area hotel the night before and ate pasta in a group. This tradition continued for about 20 years.
How many Peachtrees? 35 consecutive.
What is your favorite story? The times we stayed together with our families at the hotel near the starting line and all ate together the night before, then partied after the race.
What is your favorite tradition? Getting up early and driving 60-plus miles to join the pack near the starting line — and watching the crowd and the helicopters overhead.
What is your favorite race T-shirt? Any with a "Peach" on it. You always get questions about the race when folks see the "Peach," especially in airports.
Do you run alone or in a pack? Alone, since most of my friends don't run the race.
What do you like about the race? The crowd along the side of race course and the music along the way.
Would you make any changes? It's almost perfect, but starting a little earlier in the morning would be much cooler. I liked it after it changed to 7:30 a.m.
Quote: "I figure the more I run the more I can eat. I don't know whether I eat to run or run to eat. My weight hasn't changed in 50 years."
