A man in his 40s is now being tested at the University of Kansas Hospital for the Ebola virus.
Hospital officials say the Kansas City, Kansas man, had worked as a medic on a commercial vessel off Africa’s west coast.
The man went to the hospital Monday morning with a high fever and other Ebola like symptoms. He was isolated in an infectious disease unit for tests, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Lee Norman, the hospital’s chief medical officer said at a news conference, “The gentleman today has done well.”
Norman said the man seemed to be regaining strength.
“We think an abundance of caution is just being prudent,” Norman said
The hospital has informed state and local officials, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The patient is being treated in an area with its own ventilation system.
This patient is actually the second patient tested for Ebola at KU Hospital. About seven weeks ago, a 23-year-old man who had been in Sierra Leone in Western Africa showed up at the hospital worried that he had Ebola.
That man showed all the symptoms Ebola, but he was having a severe bout of malaria and never had Ebola.
