Cara Paiuk never expected the tedious task of filling out school paperwork to be so dramatic.
But when Paiuk came across one particular question in the Aiken Elementary School application packet for her son who is enrolling in kindergarten, she was shocked.
Under a section titled, “Birth History,” the school asks if there were any pregnancy complications, and then asks mothers to answer whether they had a vaginal birth or a Cesarean section.
When Paiuk confronted a school nurse about the intrusive question, the nurse responded that school officials needed to know about any birth traumas.
Paiuk was not satisfied with that response and wrote about the incident for a series of online publications, including a blog post for The New York Times.
School officials say they will review the form and remove the question if it is not deemed necessary.
West Hartford Schools Superintendent Thomas Moore told Yahoo Parenting that the question had been on the form for at least 20 years and no one else had complained. Moore also said that when he asked school officials if they've ever referred to the birth type question, officials claimed they didn't even know the question was on the form.
Despite the controversy, Paiuk says her son will attend Aiken Elementary this fall.
