October has been designated Georgia Archives Month by the Society of Georgia Archivists.
This annual event is geared to emphasizing the various archival repositories in Georgia, at all levels of government as well as the private sector. The theme for this year’s month is “Snapshots From the South.”
Archives Month is a good time to think about what you might have that should be donated for perpetual preservation at your local or regional archives, or to seek guidance as to where else might be the most appropriate place for the items to go.
Archival repositories in the metro Atlanta area range from the Atlanta History Center’s Kenan Library to the DeKalb History Center. Emory University has recently upgraded its Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library in the Woodruff Library. The Gwinnett Historical Society operates an archives in the old Gwinnett County Courthouse in Lawrenceville and the Roswell Historical Society has its archives in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center.
The Georgia Archives and the National Archives at Atlanta remain two of the most important places to visit, and since 2003 they have been located on the same site in Morrow.
Always check the websites of these places for the times you can visit and other policies. While some have full-time staff, others are part-time and most archives are not open to the public every day.

British, Irish newspapers online
Anyone interested in finding British and Irish newspapers online needs to look at the updated listing by Richard Heaton. He tells you where a newspaper can be found, whether it’s free or subscription, and other facts.
Go to freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dutillieul/BritishandIrishNews.html or search for "Richard Heaton's Index to Digitalised British and Irish Newspapers Online."
It’s just been updated and needs to be bookmarked for anyone using these resources. It is only an index to where to locate these newspapers; no newspapers are actually on his site.
