Q: I would like to know how to make the English Pea Salad from S & S Cafeteria. I know it has green peas, eggs, mayo but what else? I have tried several versions at home and cannot get the same taste! My nearest S & S is in Augusta, 45 miles from my home in South Carolina. I surely would like to have the list of the things they put in theirs. Thanks. — Allen Duncan, Monetta, South Carolina

A: Dean Ashley, general manager of the S & S Cafeteria on Chamblee-Tucker Road, sent us this recipe that dates from 1979. These kinds of salad were very popular in the 1960s and '70s and as our reader attests, are a customer favorite even today.

S & S Cafeteria’s English Pea Salad

3 pounds frozen peas, thawed

1 cup mayonnaise

1/2 cup grated sharp Cheddar, reserve some for garnishing salad

2 boiled eggs, chopped

1 1/2 teaspoons grated onion

In a large bowl, combine peas, mayonnaise, Cheddar, eggs and onion. Toss gently to combine and refrigerate. Serve cold. When ready to serve, garnish with reserved Cheddar. Serves: 8
