A special dance fundraiser was held recently to benefit 11-year-old Jaimee Romines, and her family of Acworth.
Over 150 attendees donned masquerade masks and danced the night away at last weekend's 9th Annual Dancers Unite Against Cancer fundraiser. The evening included dancing, performances and a comedic magic show.
Jaimee suffers from a rare eye disease called nystagmus, and while being diagnosed was found to have lesions on the brain. An MRI revealed a cancerous brain tumor which needed to be surgically removed.
“Over the last few months, we've watched Jaimee go from a sick, weak, little girl to a strong and courageous young lady,” Jaimee’s mother, Renita Romines, said in a release before the dance. “She just had her first MRI post-surgery, and praise the Lord, the tumor has not grown nor has the cyst filled! We are so relieved! Our little family has been through a lot of storms in our years; however, we have always come out stronger and more courageous after each storm. You can't have a rainbow without a little rain.”
Dancers United Against Cancer started nine years ago when Joline Falco created a fundraising event to support her mother, Nancy Falco, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Though her mother died two weeks before the event took place, Joline went on with the show in honor of her mother.
Since then, she and her siblings have turned to this annual event as a way to help others fighting cancer. Each year, local resident fighting cancer is selected to receive the proceeds. The event typically raises between $5,000 and $10,000.
