Earlier this year Canadian pop singer, Avril Lavigne, revealed that she had fought a battle with Lyme disease that left her bedridden for almost six months. She celebrated her return to better health by releasing "Fly," a single that she recorded to benefit the Special Olympics.
The video for the inspirational anthem features various participants of the Special Olympics and drives the message of “Just reach up, don’t give up.” All proceeds from the single will go to the Special Olympics.
Lavigne told Billboard Magazine that she had written the song to be included on her 2013 self-titled album. Originally the song was to be another pop production but later decided to strip it down for a softer feel. She also revealed that she hopes to perform the song at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles that will be held July 25 through Aug. 2.
Lavigne began her own non-profit in 2010, The Avril Lavigne Foundation, to benefit children and youth living with serious illness and disabilities. To coincide with the release of "Fly" she held a T-shirt design contest with sales benefitting her charity and the Special Olympics.
