Watermelons are such a big deal in the south Georgia town that it devotes most of June to the fruit. So even though half of this month is gone, you can head on down to the Watermelon Capital of the World for plenty of events dedicated to watermelons. There’s a fishing rodeo, gospel sing and horseshoe tournament this weekend before the 65th annual festival wraps up with plenty of other activities on June 28. Those include the watermelon parade, the watermelon dance and contests to throw watermelons, eat watermelons and see how far you can spit those pesky seeds.

9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 28: Arts and Crafts show, vehicle exhibits, a parade and many activities involving watermelon, including an old-fashioned watermelon seed spitting competition. The festival caps a month of events in Cordele and Crisp County celebrating the wonderful watermelon. Crisp Regional Hospital Park, Cordele. 229-273-1668
