A Waukegan, Ill., group is seeking ideas for a sculpture to honor the late science fiction writer and Waukegan native Ray Bradbury.
Bradbury, who is best known for his book “Fahrenheit 451,” died in 2012. He was born in Waukegan and lived there until he was 13. Many of his writings take place in or make mention of the northern suburb of Chicago.
Waukegan Public Library Executive Director Richard Lee has formed a committee to raise money to commission the statue to honor the author. Bradbury was a supporter of the Waukegan Public Library throughout his career, and the library was recently named one of three beneficiaries to his personal estate, the committee said in a news release.
The sculpture “could be anything from a typewriter to a firefighter,” the committee said.
“We are looking for a way to make Bradbury live forever, like his character Mr. Electrico in ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes,’” Lee said. “We want to honor him in a big way.”
The group intends to fund the sculpture through charitable donations and sponsorships. Lee said in August that he hoped the group would be able to raise about $55,000.
